SIX new recruits are setting out on a new apprenticeship scheme which aims to restore and enhance the unique South Lakes landscape.

The Rusland Valley and Fells Landscape Partnership has launched a new three-year apprenticeship scheme.

Six new apprentices have started an 18-month journey on the Rusland Horizons Scheme.

They will be working throughout the scheme area, assisting with woodland restoration, wildlife conservation and heritage projects.

Rusland Horizons is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and with the additional support and involvement of Makita, Electricity North West and Thomas Graham, a Cumbrian family business. The scheme supports local young people to develop vital practical skills and knowledge essential for pursuing a career in the rural sector.

The power tools have been donated by Makita. Thomas Graham has provided the team with a comprehensive tool store.

Mark Earles, national sales manager of Makita, said: “This is an important scheme and one Makita is proud to be involved with.

“We can be sure the team will have high performance, reliable tools to work with and we will offer training support whenever it is needed.”

Two of the new apprentices; Leia Hoggarth, of Barrow and Aiden Dineen, of Dalton, are also being sponsored by Electricity North West.

Sally McGuire, head of talent and resourcing for Electricity North West, said: “We are committed to providing opportunities for young people throughout the region through our own apprenticeship scheme and also by supporting other fantastic schemes like the new apprentice programme by Rusland Horizons.

“We were delighted to meet Leia and Aiden and we’re proud to be sponsoring their high-quality training and we are looking forward to supporting their future successful career.”

Claire Green, Rusland Horizon’s skills and training co-ordinator, said: “It is fabulous to have this opportunity to provide skills and training to local young people who are so enthusiastic and passionate about protecting this local landscape. Everyone involved with the scheme is very excited to welcome our new apprentice team and are grateful to Makita, Thomas Graham and Electricity North West for their support and involvement.”
