A MONEYMAKING motorhome park is being considered by council bosses in South Lakeland as they look for ways to boost the authority's income.

According to papers to be discussed by South Lakeland District Council members, the scheme could help net extra cash from tourists looking for somewhere to park for the night.

The idea was raised at an income generation workshop held to discuss ways for the council to bring money into the area to offset cuts to SLDC's funding from central government.

A car park at Rayrigg Meadow, in Windermere, owned by the council, has been identified as a potential home for the park should it be given a green light.

A report on the matter set to be discussed by council bosses during a cabinet meeting today states: "The feasibility of developing motor home parking on an existing council-owned car park has been explored and a potential site at Rayrigg Meadow identified.

"Alternative sites for motorhome parking areas are also being explored in Kendal and Bowness."

Another income generating idea is for a second caravan park to be opened in the area following the success of Braithwaite Fold in Bowness.

SLDC has now appointed property consultants Lambert Smith Hampton to look into the possibility of extending the site by 22 pitches to capitalise on the site's prime Lake District location and its revenue potential.

Ideas that are not to be considered any further include extending some of the busiest car parks in the district to increase the yield of parking fees from individual sites.

However, SLDC chiefs will instead look for opportunities to develop new car parks in locations where business case could be established.

They add this move may include considering the future use of "currently underutilised" car parks owned by SLDC that may have a greater value for other purposes.
