IMMEDIATE improvements will be made to controversial ticketing machines at a busy ferry crossing, following a community campaign.

Hand-held contactless devices, extra staff and simpler machines will be introduced in Windermere.

Residents and commuters have continued to express their frustration over the new machines installed last year, which were criticised for being too difficult and too time-consuming to use.

Card payments will now be able to be made without drivers leaving their cars and staff will be on hand to assist at machines.

From September, new and easier machines will be installed.

Councillor Janet Willis, cabinet member for customer engagement said:"We are pleased to have been able to make these changes in response to customer feedback.

"We hope they will improve the experience for ferry users."
