A 31-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for 70 days after beating up his ex-partner.

Appearing before Furness Magistrates' Court yesterday, Craig Alan Shepherd, of no fixed abode, admitted assaulting Maxine Turner in Windermere on November 29.

Lee Dacre, prosecuting, told the court that the pair split in October last year after eight years together, but briefly rekindled their relationship in March, before splitting up again.

Miss Turner was asleep in her room when she woke up at 11pm to find Shepherd at the bottom of her bed.

She told him to get out but he refused to leave, causing an argument. The defendant then injured Miss Turner by punching her in the head.

Chris Evans, defending, said that his client expressed remorse for assaulting the complainant and asked District Judge Gerald Chalk to consider giving Shepherd a curfew order.

However, Mr Chalk said that the defendant had breached Miss Turner's trust after attacking her in her family home, where she should feel safe.

He sentenced him to 70 days in prison and ordered him to pay compensation of £115 towards the victim.

A restraining order was also made to prevent Shepherd from contacting or approaching Miss Turner upon his release.
