A HIKER has died after falling 150 metres from a Lake District mountain.

A 50-year-old man, from Cleethorpes, fell down the front face of Dove Crag, north of Rydal, on Saturday night, sustaining fatal injuries.

The man had planned on spending the night with a group of friends on a shallow overhang called 'Priest's Hole' but is believed to have slipped.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team were called to the scene by Cumbria police at 10pm.

The assistance of the 'Rescue 999' coastguard helicopter from Prestwick in Scotland was requested during the search operation.

By using its infrared camera, the helicopter was able to direct a member of the team to casualty's location.

Mike Blakey, Patterdale team leader, said: "Our thoughts are with man's family and friends, including those were staying the night with him."
