A FLOCK of 48 decorated model lambs are set to invade the Lake District in a bid to raise £1.3m for charity.

Go Herdwick is a sheep-inspired public art trail in aid of the Calvert Trust’s 40th anniversary fundraising campaign. It's following in the footsteps of similar events across the UK, such as Gromit Unleashed and Pigs in Bath.

Sixty full size decorated ewes are already out on the trail generating a huge amount of interest. They are about to be joined by 48 lambs which are also all sponsored by local businesses and uniquely decorated by artists.

Business manager Justin Farnan said: "Phase one of the project – the ewe trail - has been a great success with several families having already seen all 60 of them since the trail launched in March.

"Whether you are a novice Herdwick spotter or a seasoned veteran, however, our lamb trail brings a new dimension to our public art project and we are expecting to see even more Go Herdwick selfies posted and shared on social media once the trail starts."

Beginning on Friday and specifically designed with the smaller visitor in mind, the 48 life sized lambs can be found in a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and similar locations.

Unlike the ewes which are spread out through the central Lakes, the lambs are all situated within easy reach for small legs in and around the town centres of Windermere, Bowness and Keswick.

Like with the ewes, lamb trail maps will be available at multiple locations, but will also have stickers and activities included to help keep smaller Herdwick spotters amused during their lamb hunt.

When the trail finishes on September 4, all 108 lambs and ewes will be rounded up and taken to Rheged where, between September 22 and 28, they will be in residence for a mass public viewing.

They will then be taken to the Low Wood Bay Hotel where, with the kind assistance of H&H Group Auctioneers, they will all be sold at a Grand Gala Auction. The auction is already shaping up to be a high-profile social event, so to register your interest for tickets go to www.goherdwick.co.uk
