WORK to lay a new sewer in Windermere will be suspended for the half term holidays so roads do not grind to a halt with the extra tourist traffic.

The A592 is due to reopen on Friday. Roadworks will then resume on Monday February 27 and run until Easter.

United Utilities is laying a new 6.5km sewer - part of a programme of work to reduce the amount of phosphorous in Windermere and improve water quality.

The sewer is being laid in stages and a rolling road closure has been in place since the start of the year .

Barriers are expected to be removed by the end of play on Friday.

Work is due to take place in phases over three successive years, with the scheme due for completion by March 2020.

The scheme will reduce the number of times the sewer network overflows into the lake during storms.
