CUMBRIA'S only manufacturer of spirits has appointed a new master blender in its mission to become a world-class distiller of alcohol.

Dhavall Gandhi will take to the blending helm at the Lakes Distillery and join up with the company's award-winning team in the run-up to the release of The Lakes Malt - Cumbria's only single malt whisky, which is set to be distributed from May 2018.

Mr Gandhi, who is a chartered scientist in whisky distilling and has a Master's degree in brewing and distilling from Heriot-Watt University, left industry giants Macallan to take up the role in the Lake District.

He said: "I'm looking forward to helping to create something new from the ground up and to have the rare opportunity to influence the house style of The Lakes Malt.

"The Lake Distillery is a well-executed project and a Cumbrian success story. The state-of-the-art distillery offers a blank canvas and a potential for creativity that is unrivalled within the industry. This is my opportunity to continue telling the story through our brands."

Representatives from the company travelled to Westminster on Tuesday to celebrate Cumbria Day after being asked to attend by Copeland MP Jamie Reed.
