THERE'S a chance to explore some of the history of one of the most treasured parts of the Lakes by joining experts on a guided fell walk around the Coniston Fells on Friday August 25, between 10am and 4pm.

The Old Man of Coniston is one of the most famous and popular mountains in the Lake District and until 1974 it was the highest peak in Lancashire, when Cumbria was formed.

Coniston Old Man has strong connections to Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons books, where the mountain was known by the children as Kanchenjunga.
