RURAL life was celebrated in all of its glory at one of the most popular and long-running shows in Cumbria yesterday.

Families and farmers gathered in Torver on Sunday for the Lakeland Country Fair to have a fun day out.

Visitors got a glimpse of what life is like on the farm and learned all about traditional Cumbrian crafts, interests and skills.

One of traditional sports on display was Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling which drew large crowds to watch.


Jan Kershaw helping with the fell pony display. LINDSEY DICKINGS Jan Kershaw, from Newton-in-Furness, was with the fell pony display and said she thoroughly enjoyed the day.

She said: "It was a lovely day. After Saturday's weather we were very lucky.

"The show was never going to be cancelled but the weather was better than we thought so we did have a great day.

"The people that we were with, the company, the show, the location, it's all amazing.

"It was great to see so many young people and families."

The various dog shows have become a staple feature of the fair, with well groomed sheepdogs, beagles, lurchers and whippets paraded around the fields, vying for a win in one of the many classes.

Nigel Coe, from Coniston, organised the adult fell race and said there was a good turnout with 55 runners.

He said: "We were 10 runners up from last year. They went to the top of the Old Man.

"The conditions were very windy with mist and rain."
