A CHEF is aiming to reclaim a world record for Cumbria - after the right to boast the world's biggest sausage was taken by a Serbian.

Jon Fell is hoping to make and cook the whopper Cumberland sausage to win back the bragging rights for the county.

Gary McClure, of Broughton, broke the world record in 2012 when large crowds gathered in the village square to witness the creation of a 12ft wide Cumberland sausage weighing 22lb 3oz.

But that title was taken by a man in Serbia in 2013.

Mr Fell hopes that reclaiming the record will also help highlight Cumbria's recovery from last year's floods.

"We want to shout it loud and proud that Cumbria is open for business," said Mr Fell, chef at The White Mare, Beckermet, where the record attempt will take place - under the supervision of Guinness World Records judges - on November 12.

The Cumberland ring - around 16 times the length of a regular sausage - will take around seven hours to make and only 30 minutes to cook over charcoal in a specially-designed oven.
