PEOPLE across the area will be put through their paces as they prepare to take on a celebrated physical challenge in Windermere.

The Brathay Windermere Marathon and Half Marathon is taking place today.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the marathon which has raised more than £1m since it began in 2007, helping to support so many vulnerable children and adults in our area.

Godfrey Owen, chief executive of the Brathay Trust, said:

"This is sure to be another exhilarating, highly emotional day, as runners stretch every sinew in their efforts to complete the course and raise much needed funds for a variety of good causes and Brathay projects.

"Since 2007, these events have raised over £1 million to support vulnerable children and young people.

"Donations from our supporters have been vital in enabling us to work with increasing numbers of children and young people throughout the UK."

More than 10,000 have taken on the 26.2 mile trek around Windermere to the beautiful backdrop of some of the country's most spectacular views.

However, some hardcore athletes are pushing themselves to the extreme by running their tenth marathon in 10 days to raise money for the charity.
