A TRADITIONAL show in the Lake District promises to provide plenty of entertainment for the whole family today.

Huge crowds are expected at Coniston Country Fair on Sunday, which will feature lots of fun activities.

Fell races, Lakeland crafts, falconry displays, child egg throwing competitions and lots of farming exhibits are just some of the highlights.

Country traditions thrill thousands in Coniston

The event prides itself on putting the spotlight on traditional local sports and pursuits, with Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling contests taking centre stage.

Neil Salisbury, treasurer on the Coniston Country Fair committee, said this year's event looks set to be the best one yet.

He said: "It's in the most beautiful setting on the shore of Coniston Water which is absolutely gorgeous. It's a real traditional Lakeland fair.

"It shows off the best and traditional Lakeland crafts and pastimes.

"We have dog shows, fell racing, trade stands by the dozen, and there is a dry stone walling competition which we haven't had for a lot of years."

Where and when is the show being held?

The Coniston Country Fair will be held at Coniston Hall and gets underway from 11.30am.

How much does it cost?

Admission will be £6 for adults and £3 for under 16s.

Where should I park?

Visitors to the show are advised that Coniston Hall is two miles south of the village on the A593.

Car parking will be signed and cars should follow directions through Coniston Hall Campsite and into the farm yard.

When are the fell races?

The fell race, which is organised by members of Coniston Running Club, is always one of the most popular attractions.

The senior six-mile fell race, which takes runners up Coniston Old Man and a total elevation of 2,400ft, starts from the main show ring at 2pm and entry to the run is free.

What can the children enjoy?

Ridgeside Falconry is an exciting element on the show programme, with members of the public able to get a close look at various birds of prey and the chance to handle them.

Children can also enjoy bouncy castles, donkey rides, archery, face painting and pet shows.

What is the weather forecast?

The weather forecast for Coniston on Sunday is for light cloud and the chance of some rain later in the day.

If the weather permits, local hang gliding enthusiasts will be leaping off Coniston Old Man and landing near the show field.

Are dogs allowed?

Visitors are more than welcome to bring their dogs to the show but they must be kept on a lead and under control while on the farm land and the show field.
