A picturesque park on the shores of Windermere is set to be reinvigorated with a £150,000 investment to bring it back to its former glory.

Members of the Millerground Enhancement Group, led by Windermere and Bowness Civic Society, have received funding to transform the Millerground site on the shores of Windermere.

Sprucing up the 39-acre site, it is hoped, will become a spectacular natural asset for residents and visitors to South Lakeland.

Pleased and excited

The Millerground Enhancement Group Chair, John Saunders, said: "It will be a wonderful natural rest area between Windermere and Bowness, which is something we don't really have at the moment.

"It's such good news for our community, everyone is pleased and very excited."

The money invested

The group heard that it had been successful in receiving a £50,000 grant from South Lakeland District Councils (SLDC) Locally Important Projects (LIP) fund.

A further £100,000 has been committed from SLDC's capital fund.

As well as creating the new playground, the money will be spent on creating a new picnic area, improved access to the beach and lake, and adding and restoring pathways.

The council will be working with the project group to develop plans for the refurbishment, which is due to take place next spring.

Councillor 'very proud'

The SLDC councillor for the ward of Windermere Applethwaite and Troutbeck, Councillor Ben Berry, said: "I have worked with this project from the beginning and it is amazing to see how hard the work of local people has paid off in improving our area.

"It makes me very proud to represent Windermere."
