SOUTH Lakes teenager Jamie Ratcliffe is going on the adventure of a lifetime, to the Peruvian Amazon jungle.
Jamie, 16, is one of 60 teenagers chosen worldwide to go on the challenge in July and August this year.
The student, who studies at Kirkbie Kendal School, has raised £2,850 of the £4,800 he needs to take part in the research trip.
Jamie and the other 59 teenagers will be travelling to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, which is one of the most wild and diverse ecosystems on the planet.
Youth development charity, British Schools Exploring Society is organising the expedition.
Jamie said: “We will be gathering and analysing data on all of the threatened species from river dolphins and native birds.
“Some other groups will also be working on turtle breeding protection.
“It’s an opportunity and I’m very grateful that I have been chosen.
“We’ll undergo some jungle survival training, cutting our way through dense rainforest and canoeing the complex network of jungle waterways.”
Those taking part in this journey must be physically fit, highly motivated and resourceful, according to the BSES guidelines.
Jamie added: “The challenge is absolutely incredible and I can’t wait for the expedition to start. People have been brilliant helping me for the fundraising, but I still have a long way to go.
“People in my village of Witherslack have been particularly supportive and are currently organising an open garden event on May 22 which will start at 10.30am.”
Anyone who would like to support Jamie in his efforts is asked to write to Jamie Ratcliffe, c/o Witherslack community shop, Witherslack, Grange, Cumbria, LA11 6RH.
