Impressive speeds at records week in Coniston
Last updated at 16:16, Thursday, 08 November 2012
THERE is one world record attempt that springs to mind when people think of Coniston Water.
But every year, at Records Week, boating enthusiasts try to make their own mark by smashing a range of water speed records.
And while the dramatic events on Monday, when a boat flipped and caught fire, may have evoked memories of Donald Campbell’s fatal crash in Bluebird, organisers hope the successes that followed will leave a more lasting impression. In the first half of the five-day event, competitors broke 14 world records, already topping last year’s effort when six were broken. And some of the new top speeds are improvements on times set at last year’s event.
Glyn Cunliffe, a spokesman for the event, said: “It has been absolutely fantastic. I think the weather on Monday was perfect.”
Monday was the most eventful day so far with 22 records broken – eight of which were world records.
The event also saw an unlimited hydroplane hit English waters for the first time.
The impressive boat, which made the trip all the way from Seattle, was put through its paces by American JW Myers – breaking a world record and hitting 176mph.
Windermere’s own Peter Hart also entered the record books, clocking 77.6mph in the RIB R2 class.
