Group to put some welly into world record attempt

A WORLD record attempt to form the longest Conga line of welly-wearers is due to take place in South Lakeland this weekend.
By David Pickthall
The event has been organised to raise money for a Congolese charity in Africa.
The record attempt, called Conga for Congo, will take place in Witherslack on Dean Barwick Primary School field on Saturday at 2pm.
Pupils, residents, farmers, Women’s Institute members, churchgoers and many more are set to join in the attempt to break the current record of 208 people.
John Sainsbury, a member of Witherslack’s Outreach House church, is heading a group of villagers who plan to fly out to Africa next year to help people who have suffered at the hands of war and natural disasters.
Funding from the day will help cover the mercy mission to help Heal Africa – an organisation in Goma on the Congo-Rowanda border.
Mr Sainsbury said: “It’s definitely a manageable record. It’s not a Guiness World Record, it’s a World Record Academy record for smaller things.
“Hopefully it can put Witherslack on the map.
“We’re so privileged to live in this wonderful Lakeland community where people really do look after and care for each other.
“We want to share that with people across the world who have so little.
“The Congo team will put our people skills to good use, especially meeting the enormous needs of traumatised women and displaced children.
“It could be as simple as playing football or giving some basic English lessons.”
The afternoon will get underway at noon when South Lakes MP Tim Farron is due to officially open the wellington boot themed fun day.
Admission on the day is £2 and £1 for under-16s.
