The extra rooms at Cartmel Grange, in Allithwaite Road, Grange, mean another 14 residents can receive 24-hour nursing or dementia care.

The wing is centred on a calm courtyard, where guests can look out onto a fountain and grassy area.

Residents on the ground floor will even be able to access the yard from their own rooms via patio doors.

Lynn White, clinical nurse manager, said: “It’s in-keeping with the rest of the building, which is nice.

“There was an awful lot of disruption, but the staff coped very well.

“We even had to have mobile kitchens.

“We’re just waiting on the garden furniture to complete the courtyard.”

The project took 18 months of hard work but has resulted in nine more nursing beds and five elderly and mentally infirm beds. Ms White added: “We got there eventually and it was absolutely worth it.

“We are full now.

“We have a very good reputation.

“People come to us through word of mouth and I think this extension will encourage more people to come here.

“All our care is individual to the patient.

“We like to think of each of our residents as individuals and treat them that way.”
