FLOOKBURGH families are jubilant following a five-figure community grant following a 13-year campaign for increased funding.

Residents in Flookburgh will be the beneficiaries of a £34,000 windfall after securing the money from South Lakeland District Council.

This grant came from the district council's Locally Improvement Projects scheme which allows locals to apply for funding.

The money will go toward transforming an area off Moor Lane in the village.

Claire Welburn, trustee of the Flookburgh and District Recreational Charity, said: “After all those years we’re now allowing ourselves to get excited. It’s finally happening and we are going to get the facilities we need.”

The project is one of 16 new applications approved by SLDC in the latest round of LIPs grant funding worth £287,000.

The grants support the council’s priorities on the environment, housing, supporting the local economy, health and wellbeing.

SLDC Leader, Councillor Giles Archibald, said: “These grants are proving to be a popular and highly effective way of supporting some excellent projects, like the creation of new play facilities in Flookburgh, which help local organisations and communities to achieve real results.”

Since 2013 SLDC has awarded 72 LIPs grants worth almost £1m.
