RIDERS and their horses have helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity by taking part in a sponsored South Cumbria ride.

Some 50 riders of all ages got involved in Furness Riding for the Disabled Association's sponsored ride at Holker Hall.

The charity runs horse riding sessions for children with disabilities during term time at Seaview Riding School, on Walney.

Lord and Lady Cavendish, who own the Holker Hall Estate, give the charity use of the estate for the sponsored ride each year and the day is Furness RDA's biggest fundraising event of the year.

On September 24 the riders and horses enjoyed exploring the picturesque South Cumbria estate over the 10 mile and 17.5 mile routes. Youngsters through to those in their late seventies took part and have helped to raise around £3,000 for Furness RDA.

Furness RDA has thanked all the riders, the sponsors of the event, the charity's volunteers and Lord and Lady Cavendish for the use of the estate.

Alexander Veterinary Centre in Barrow sponsored the rosettes and Marks and Spencer in Barrow, which is supporting the RDA as its charity this year, gave a luxury hamper as a raffle prize.
