IT'S that time of year when racing fans take out their hats and head to one of Britain's most spectacular race courses.

Cartmel Races is set to return with a flourish this bank holiday weekend. The event is a hit with people across the region who flock to the picturesque village for a classy day out.

With rolling hills surrounding its famed course, Cartmel undoubtedly offers one of the most stunning views for racing fans who turn out year after year to enjoy the show.

Powerful horses thunder their way along the track, watched by people of all ages and backgrounds who all enjoy that unique sense of thrill.

From ladies dressed up to the nines enjoying a glass of bubbly to hardened race goers hoping for a cheeky win, Cartmel Races has something for everyone, including the younger fans.

Looking through the Evening Mail's picture archives, we discovered some classic snaps of fun family days out at the races.

More than 25 years ago in 1989, the races were as popular as ever as crowds of people lined the stands to catch a glimpse at the favourites.

Groups milled round the racecourse taking in the sights and sounds of the ground while enjoying the odd drink or three to celebrate or commiserate their luck.

Children ran around with excitement, relishing a day in the open air with that ultimate carnival feeling.

The races are also the perfect opportunity for groups, charities and organisations to raise awareness of the work they carry out throughout the area, much like Grange Lions Club did back in 1989.

However, whatever the year, the star of the show is undoubtedly the racing itself which captures the hearts and imaginations of thousands of spectators.
