A FITNESS fanatic who uses exercise as a way of managing a lifelong condition is bidding to boost the health of a town.

Richard Hunter wants to convert a former office in into a open a pay-as-you-go-gym.

The application, for a property in Grange, is set to be discussed by planning chiefs at South Lakeland District Council.

Mr Hunter, who has multiple sclerosis, said: "I beat it through exercise. I have got no times for drugs. Feeling great is all about what you do and what goes in your mouth.

"This venture is a winner. The location is in a great place in Grange, near to bus stops and the train station. People have long round trips at the moment, but this will change that."

The application is for a vacant space at Palace Buildings in Main Street, which once formed part of the entrance to the town's cinema.

It is now used by multiple businesses including a Chinese takeaway, a pub, a recruitment company and a nutritional advice shop.

The space which Mr Hunter wishes to occupy was once a computer showroom and workshop before it was refurbished and left empty.

An application submitted to the council states the gym would occupy three floors, and would be accessed via an entrance which has 'Greek temple-style pillars'.

It adds: "At the moment there is nowhere that is easily accessible to exercise independently without incurring transport costs and a high membership fee.

"The local council saw a need for this type of facility and installed outdoor gym equipment on the prom which is good if you have a lot of time in the day and can exercise in all weathers.

"Hunter Leisure and Fitness will also have a fitness instructor available to support visitors and a personal trainer who will set up fitness plans and provide continued support if necessary."

The application should be discussed and ruled upon within eight weeks.
