ONE of Britain's most acclaimed chefs, livestock and equine classes, terrier racing and children's entertainment are all on the bill for Cartmel Show on Wednesday.

Michelin-starred chef, Simon Rogan, of L’Enclume - The Good Food Guide's number one restaurant in the UK for four consecutive years - will be giving a culinary demonstration in the agricultural show's new Food Theatre (see the panel below). Butcher Jon Watson and chef Dan Akrigg will also be on hand showing the public how to prepare the best cuts of Lake District meats and produce.

The event at Cartmel Racecourse also has an extended food hall marquee with more local producers attending this year.

Cartmel Show is promising to be a great day for all the family. This Lakes day out will also be more accessible than ever before, as the organisers are running a free shuttle bus service from Cark railway station to the show ground from 10am to 6pm.

The show has record entries in the horse section with more 200 horses and ponies taking part in the competitions, and more heavy horses entered in classes than ever before.

Visitors will see more than 300 sheep exhibits, with 27 children under 12 getting involved in the young handler classes. There are also more than 50 cattle exhibits. Longhorn cattle are also back at the show for the first time in many years.

There is also a poultry, a dog show, a combined village industries and horticulture tent marquee, a craft marquee, willow weaving, coppicing and other skills in the demonstrations marquee, and more than 90 trade stands.

Children will be kept busy with bouncy castles, archery, a climbing wall and circus tricks. Families can also view birds of prey, creepy crawlies and snakes.

The traditional Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling competition is open to all on the day.

The main ring is packed with entertainment all day, including the Vale of Lune Harriers Hunt hounds, vintage tractors and machinery, mounted fancy dress for the children and the Grand Parade of the prize winning livestock.

In the afternoon there will be terrier racing, and families are being encouraged to bring along their terriers along as entries are taken on the day. Well behaved dogs are welcome at the show, but they are not to be left in cars.

Show secretary Sarah Dickinson said the event will be a great day out for families, featuring the Best of British farming, food and more. She thanked all the volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, and visitors who support the event each year.

The show is also in good hands for the future, with more than 20 young people being involved with the setting up of the showground.
