AN inspirational and well-respected south Cumbria horsewoman was honoured with a fitting equine tribute at her funeral.

Three horses led the cortege which travelled to church for the service commemorating Jean Rogers on Wednesday.

Mrs Rogers, of Cartmel, was a leading figure and stalwart of equine charity The British Horse Society and Cartmel Agricultural Show.

The BHS North of England chairwoman died on March 12, aged 78.

Mrs Rogers had dedicated decades to the charity as a renowned BHS instructor, examiner, welfare officer and chairwoman in Cumbria and the north. She won the prestigious Bodynfoel Award for excellent service with her husband David in 2013.

She served Cartmel Agricultural Show for some 50 years and was the show's president this year.

Shire horse Sky, of Old Hall Farm, Bouth, Mr Roger's horse Gem, and thoroughbred Tilly stood patiently with their handlers outside St Peter's Church, Field Broughton, near Cartmel, and throughout the service.

There was standing room only in the church as hundreds of friends joined Mrs Rogers's family for the service.

There were eulogies from friends Charlotte Sharphouse and Jenny Weir with tributes and fond memories about Mrs Rogers's dedication to the equine world, her family and friends.

Donations were collected for the church and The British Horse Society Welfare Fund.
