AS a superstar prepares to return to south Cumbria for the first time in 50 years, why why why would anyone pass up the chance to see a musical legend up close and personal?

On Friday Sir Tom Jones will perform at Cartmel Racecourse to legions of adoring fans who have waited decades for his return.

Sir Tom last played in the area back in 1966 at the 99 Club in Barrow, before jetting off to America to reach even greater heights of fame.

The show is presented by North West-based music promoters Cuffe and Taylor.

Director Peter Taylor said: “The excitement has been building ever since we announced this show and we cannot wait for Friday.

“We have done many shows across the UK with Sir Tom over the last few years and what we can guarantee is that this will be an amazing, unique and unforgettable experience.

“Tom Jones is simply a music icon whose live shows are the stuff of legend. Bringing him to such a picturesque and stunning location as Cartmel is a massive thrill for us and I am sure the thousands of music fans and racegoers will have a sensational night that will live long in the memory.”

When the concert was first announced, the promoters offered hardcore fans the chance to buy a ticket for 1966 prices - 10 shillings back then, just 50p today.

There will be something for the whole family at Cartmel this weekend when the two-day meeting opens with music showcase Friday, followed by Family Funday Sunday.

Local trainer James Moffatt is planning a tilt at this prize with his course specialist Altruism, who has already won four times at his local track, but will be on a recovery mission after a disappointing effort over fences at the last meeting.

Essential information

On Friday the first race will take place at 2.20pm, with the final runner at 5.20pm. Racegoers will not have to wait long after that for Sir Tom to take to the stage, with the performance expected to begin shortly after 6pm.

The day is expected to be very busy, with most tickets already sold out.

When arriving in Cartmel, there are some important traffic notices to take into account.

There will be no parking permitted on Friday in Cartmel village. This extends on to Headless Cross and Haggs Lane.

A taxi pick up and drop off point has been arranged located just to the south of the racecourse. The racecourse recommend booking taxis for after 9pm to avoid a rush.

There is also a bus service which runs to Cark railway station, and car parking inside the racecourse is available from £6.
