A VENICE-themed afternoon tea has raised more than £1,000 for the NSPCC.

The event, held at the United Reformed Church in Grange, attracted around 90 visitors, with a singer, raffle and competitions on offer.

The Grange NSPCC fundraising committee, who dressed as gondoliers for the day, hosted the event for the 12th year.

Sheila Tyson, chair of the committee, said: "It was fantastic and everybody said it was a wonderful afternoon.

"People were very good in supporting us and we raised more than we have on any other year."

The £1,062 raised will go towards helping the children's charity protect more children from abuse and neglect.

In 2017, Cumbria Police recorded 547 sexual offences against children under 16, while 523 children were subject to a child protection plan.

A further 625 children were in care.

The NSPCC runs a variety of services in Cumbria, including ones for young people who are at risk of, or are being, sexually abused.

The charity also visits primary schools, talking to children about their right to be safe.
