Generous Evening Mail readers help appeal make grand progress

THE Evening Mail’s campaign to raise money for the Barrow Foodbank has seen more than £1,000 being raised in less than two weeks.

Thanks to generous members of the public and locals businesses backing the campaign, £1,022 has been donated so far.

The aim is to raise £1,680 in four weeks, which will be enough money to pay for a tonne of food.

As part of the campaign, the Evening Mail team set up a pop-up shop outside Tesco Extra on Hindpool Road, in Barrow yesterday.

The team was there from 10am until 2pm and members of the public either donated food or money.

Patricia Bolton was one of the many Barrow residents keen to donate money to the cause.

She said: “I have been in a difficult situation in the past and now I am in a position to give something back.”

Jennifer Clarke donated baby food.

She said: “It’s a good cause and it makes people aware of the problems that are out there.”

The aim is not only to encourage people to donate money or tins, but also to raise awareness of how many people need help.

The campaign was launched due to increased demand being placed on the Barrow Foodbank over the summer holidays.

More pressure is being put on supplies at Barrow Foodbank than ever because families are not receiving free school meals during the holidays.

Cynthia Stewart visited the pop-up shop at Tesco Extra yesterday with a carrier bag full of food.

She said: “I am donating to the Foodbank because I would not like to think of my children going without.”

Audrey Briggs also made a large donation of food to the cause.

She said: “It’s a good cause, one that is necessary and it benefits people from all different age groups.”
