Shahnaz Asghar, a Barrow and Copeland public governor for the local hospital trust, has sold almost £1,250 worth of raffle tickets to support Breast Cancer UK this year.

She has also raised money for children’s services by holding bag packing events at Asda.

John Cowdall, the chair of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, paid tribute to Ms Asghar.

He said: “Shahnaz has worked tirelessly to help the Trust in a variety of ways over the past 12 months.

“As well as her governor duties, she has promoted volunteering and single-handedly raised money for charitable appeals, and she is a credit to the organisation.”

Ms Asghar said: “I am very grateful for all the support I have received over the past year and am happy to promote the hospitals and their services.

“The work the staff do each and every day should be applauded.”

The Council of Governors is made up of public, staff and partner governors.

Anybody can stand to become a public governor, and elections are held each year.
