Furness College students' poster power highlights alcohol warning message

YOUNGSTERS got in touch with their creative side to warn others about the dangers of alcohol.
Youngsters at Furness College were tasked with creating designs as part of the Don’t Pre-load campaign.
The multi-agency drive warns people of the risks associated with drinking to excess at home before leaving for the pubs and clubs.
The best of the students’ designs will appear on beer mats and posters distributed by the Barrow and South Lakeland Barwatch schemes.
They will also be displayed via ‘the eye’ – the projection onto the white building opposite Barrow police station.
The winners were picked by a panel of agencies including the Community Safety Partnership Alcohol Strategy Group, members of the public and licensees.
Rebecca Rawlings, Barrow Borough Council community safety officer, said: “We want everyone to enjoy their Christmas parties and nights out. But our advice is ‘don’t pre-load’, don’t get gazeboed (drunk) before you head off to the pub.”
Sarah Hardie, 18, of Florence Street, Barrow, a first-year art and design student, was one of the first-placed winners with her text message-style beer mat design. She said: “I tried to aim it at people around my own age, rather than older people, because if they have the information at that age it can prevent them from making a mistake or harming themselves in later life.”
