Football match abandoned after Millom player knocked unconscious

A FOOTBALL match between Millom FC and Walney Island FC was abandoned in the final minute after a player was knocked unconscious.

The accident took place during Tuesday night’s match at Walney.

Millom player Jordan Williams was hit by the football after it was struck by an opposition player. He fell to the ground and was rendered unconscious in the 89th minute of the match.

An ambulance was called and paramedics treated Mr Williams at the scene before taking him to Furness General Hospital.

The match had to be abandoned because it had become too dark to play. According to league rules. the fixture will have to be re-arranged.

The score before the accident was 3-2 to Millom.

Mr Williams was discharged from hospital late last night and team mates have said that he is recovering well.

Millom player Carl Waters said: “He is home now, but he will have quite a shiner after that hit.

“He was unconcious on the floor and we called an ambulance because he wasn’t coming around.

“The first thing he asked when he woke up was ‘did we win?’ He was gutted the game was abandoned."

Walney Island club secretary Michael Austin said the match would have to be replayed.

Mr Austin said: “It’s football league rules that the match has to be replayed.

“We’re not sure what knocked him out; whether it was the football hitting him, or him hitting the ground.

“We will have to replay the match, that’s just the way it is.”

Have your say

Robbie you may need to check the rule book as well as the dictionary you muppet. Good luck for the weekend Millom, I hope Jordan is recovering well. Looking forward to seeing you back over at Walney. M.Austin

Can't believe Millom don't get the points when it was in the 90th minute. Let's just hope Millom put more goals into Walney and they get relegated on goal differance
