Festive market to make town magical
Published at 16:42, Friday, 30 November 2012
FROM an ice rink to an array of winter log cabins offering gift ideas, there promises to be entertainment for everyone at the Barrow Christmas markets.
The event, with the theme Making Barrow Magical this Christmas, will return this weekend and on December 8 and 9.
The Lake District-based Taylor’s Funfair will bring its Victorian rides on both weekends to bring Dalton Road to life. in two sections – from the Abbey Road end to High Street, and from Cavendish Street to Home Bargains.
Boss David Taylor, of Levens, promised the travelling fair will cater “for nine months to 99 years”.
He said: “It’s the only place in Barrow where kids can take their grandparents for a day out.
“It’s a bit of a bonus for us when we come to Barrow because we take a good few bob and get to say hello to everybody. Barrow people are always friendly.”
Mr Taylor is confident a 60-foot-high Ferris wheel will be added to the line-up of rides over the second weekend.
Two of the main attractions this opening weekend will be the ice rink and log cabin bouncy castle, sponsored by Poole Townsend, at the Abbey Road end of Dalton Road.
With a snow machine set to add a festive white dusting to proceedings, the Yuletide occasion is sure to have a winter atmosphere, no matter the weather.
No festive extravaganza would be complete without old St Nic, and so Santa’s Grotto will be open on each of the four days, from 11am until 4pm.
The signature attraction of any Christmas market is its log cabins.
Between Cavendish Street and Portland Walk, Dalton Road will be lined with 16 chalets boasting all manner of tasty bites and gifts.
There will be silver jewellery from Jewels of the Caribbean, vintage food recipes from Dane Stone Cards, exclusive designer jewellery from Special Expressions and wares from the English Lakes Soap Company.
Singer Lesley Stretton, who runs Drama Hub in Ulverston, will perform both weekends, while the children’s musical theatre group KS Musicals, run by Walney teacher Katherine Smith, will make its first public appearance tomorrow from noon until 12.30pm.
Over the second weekend, people can enjoy the popular Bread and Butter Theatre Company, with Ulverston entertainer Garry Gifford, Barrow’s Cambridge Primary School choir, and traditional carols from Furness Music Centre.
