Female Barrow victim beaten ‘as if she were a man’

A THUG who beat a woman “as if she was a man” could face a prison sentence.

After a heavy drinking session, Darren James Doran battered a woman when she tried to remove him from her home.

Appearing at Furness Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating.

Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said the victim, Heather Kendall, was at home in Barrow when Doran and another man dropped by at 2.45pm. Both men appeared to be drunk.

The court heard how the victim asked Doran to leave later in the afternoon, which led to the altercation. Mrs Hine said: “The victim got to her feet and indicated that she would throw him out. Doran started punching her to the face and head. The victim received a bloodied and swollen nose, a bruised eye and bruised forehead. The other male visitor said Doran had punched the victim ‘as if she was a man’.”

The court heard how Doran then bit the other victim, Trevor Wilde, when he tried to intervene.

Following his arrest, Doran said he had drunk six litres of cider and several cans of strong lager since 6am.

Miss Karen Templeton, defending, said Doran could not remember the events, other than a vague recollection of arriving at the house.

The case was adjourned until March 7, for a pre-sentence report to be compiled. Doran, of Church Street, Barrow, was granted conditional bail but warned by magistrates that he could face a custodial sentence.
