Everything’s turned out write for winners

A TRIO of readers have been rewarded for penning insightful letters to the Evening Mail.
Barrow AFC fan Gary Bundy scooped £50 for winning the April letter of the month. The 45-year-old, of Medway Road, Walney, wrote a piece to convince Bluebirds members to vote in favour of American businessman Paul Casson’s takeover.
More than 90 per cent voted in favour and Mr Bundy, who works at OneSubsea in Barrow, could not wait for the new era to begin when he popped into the Mail office last week. He said: “I don’t know if my letter made any difference, but the fact the overall vote was a ‘yes’ is good enough for me.
“Unfortunately I’ll miss the first home match (tomorrow, vs Gainsborough Trinity) because I’m away on holiday. I think the odds with the bookies are too short (Barrow are favourites for promotion), but I think they’ll be there or thereabouts – certainly in the play-offs.”
Retired journalist John Simpson won the June letter of the month, in which he questioned Barrow Borough Council’s decision to allow BAE Systems to use part of the Dock Museum for recruitment.
The 68-year-old, of Melbourne Street, Barrow, is donating his £50 to the Barnabus Fund which is helping Chaldean Christians evicted on pain of death from their homes in Mosul by the Isis terrorist group. He said: “The Christians have been in Iraq since AD 300 or thereabouts, 300 years before the birth of the Islamic religion, so it is a really wicked act making them flee and stealing their homes, cars and even mobile phones.
“It’s a good thing the Evening Mail has a letter of the month to encourage people to write to the paper and air their views.”
Gillian Powell, of Stank, won the prize for July for her letter criticising parking meters. She said: “The meters are an issue I feel very strongly about. I don’t think the councillors realise the impact it’s going to have on workers and businesses.”
Karen Smith, 43, of Hindpool, Barrow, won £50-worth of fuel. She said: “I also won £50 of fuel four months ago. I didn’t actually win anything, ever. But all of a sudden, I keep winning.”
