Evening Mail reaches Barrow Food Bank fundraising target - thanks to your help

AN EVENING Mail campaign has smashed its target by raising and collecting one tonne of food to feed struggling families over the summer holidays.
With one tonne of food costing Barrow Food Bank £1,680, generous residents have been busy donating cash, writing cheques and handing in sacks of tins at the Evening Mail’s offices in Abbey Road, Barrow.
And in just 15 days, the one tonne target has now been reached thanks to kind-hearted citizens and businesses donating what they can.
A total of £1,644.50 has been donated in money towards the campaign so far, equating to 978.58 kg, while volunteers from the foodbank collected a huge pile of food from the Evening Mail’s reception on Friday, weighing 140.2 kg.
Ann Mills, project manager at Barrow Foodbank, was delighted by the public response and, given what she has seen since the foodbank first opened, was not surprised.
She said: “The people in this town are really just so generous. They have rallied to the cause and I’m always humbled by what they give.
“We are not the richest town, but I’m sure we are the most generous in the country. I never forget our very first collection – we were the second highest in the country for donations at Tesco. And that beat London, Birmingham and all these other big areas. It’s amazing, really wonderful.
“And thank you very much to the Evening Mail, as always. You have really supported us from the start and we really appreciate that.”
The Barrow Food Bank, which has satellite sites in Ulverston and Millom, has faced a huge upsurge in demand over the summer holidays as families which usually rely on free school meals have been forced to seek help.
The Evening Mail decided to step in and do its bit to help make sure residents didn’t go hungry.
Despite reaching the one tonne target, the Tonne of Tins campaign will continue as planned until September 5, with residents and businesses urged to continue their amazing support.
Anyone who wants to donate to the Tonne of Tins campaign should address cheques to Barrow Food Bank and post them to the Evening Mail’s offices in Abbey Road, Barrow.

As part of the Tonne of Tins campaign, the Evening Mail hit the road last week, collecting items from shoppers at supermarkets in Barrow, Ulverston and Millom.
