Efforts step up in campaign to help Barrow food bank

GENEROUS individuals, businesses and groups have backed the Evening Mail’s drive to raise enough money to pay for a tonne of food for Barrow Foodbank.
The Evening Mail has launched a campaign to raise £1,680 in four weeks following the increase of demand being placed on the service over the summer.
More pressure is being put on supplies at Barrow Foodbank than ever because families are not receiving free school meals during the holidays.
So far £935 has been raised by the community towards the cause – which means we are more than halfway towards the one tonne target.
The Evening Mail has also donated £100 towards the cause, meaning the campaign has until September 5 to raise the remaining £645.
And efforts will step up another notch next week when the appeal hits the road.
The Evening Mail team will be at supermarkets in Barrow, Millom and Ulverston next week to encourage people to donate what they can, whether that is money or tins.
Between 10am and 2pm, a pop-up shop will be at the following locations:
l Monday – Tesco Extra in Hindpool Road, Barrow.
l Tuesday – Tesco Superstore in Lancashire Street, Millom.
l Thursday – Booths in Canal Street, Ulverston.
A tonne of food at the Barrow Foodbank costs £1,680, with a pack to feed a family of four for three days costing £50.40.
Food vouchers entitle people to items such as tinned vegetables, UHT milk, noodles and tomato sauce.
Ann Mills, project manager of Barrow Foodbank, said volunteers had been giving away anything up to one-and-a-half tonnes of food a day this summer.
Everyone who donates money to the campaign will be featured on the Evening Mail’s Tonne of Tins “roll of honour” at the end of the campaign.
Cheques for the campaign should be addressed to Barrow Foodbank and posted to the Evening Mail’s offices in Abbey Road, Barrow.
To donate by credit or debit card, call our accounts team to make a secure payment on 01229 840173.
