Drive to install lifesaving gear to continue as Barrow ex-mayoress tribute

THE campaign to install lifesaving technology across Barrow will continue as a lasting tribute to the woman described as the “engine” behind a major fundraising drive.
Eleanor Murphy, 63, died on Wednesday after she collapsed at work following a suspected heart attack.
Mrs Murphy was Barrow mayoress from 2011 to 2012 alongside her husband of 44 years and then mayor Councillor John Murphy. She helped her husband raise more than £40,000 which was used to buy more than 30 defibrillators now positioned across the town.
Cllr Murphy said: “It was Eleanor’s idea to work hard for the defibrillator appeal – I might have been the face but she was the engine.
"She did so much for the community. We will be carrying on in her name to supply public use defibrillators – it’s her legacy."
The couple, who met when they were in their early teens, attended 354 civic events during Cllr Murphy’s year in office and, despite her civic duties, still found time to volunteer at Barrow Food Bank and soup kitchens, and to look after her eight grandchildren.
He said: “It’s such a loss for all who knew and loved her, she was such an amazing lady.
“She really enjoyed her year as mayoress – she was a Barrow girl born-and-bred and she was proud to endorse the town. I used the robes but she used her personality.’’
Mrs Murphy, who was working in B&Q up to her death, had a “tireless” work ethic and previously worked for PKA in Barrow.
Cllr Murphy said: “This isn’t a loss, it’s a devastation. We would do everything together – we went all over the world, she really enjoyed her travelling, but overall we just loved each other’s company.”
Cllr Murphy said his wife’s death had left him heartbroken. He added: “The whole family is sticking together. Eleanor was our life. I just don't know how we'll get through it but we will.’’
Mrs Murphy is survived by children Jane Mallone, Tony Murphy and Katie Eddy. Her funeral is yet to be arranged.

My deepest condolences to John and his family on their tragic loss. Clearly, a fine example of a lady who had worked hard for both her family and community.
