Dog kills Millom woman’s cat

A GREAT-grandmother has been left heartbroken after one of her prized pets was killed in an attack by a stray dog.
Denise Lippe was distraught after her six-year-old cat, Simba, was attacked and killed in Oxford Street, Millom.
Mrs Lippe, who is well-known locally as a cat lover, was contacted by an Oxford Street resident who found Simba in the street outside her home.
The pensioner was reduced to tears as she remembered her cat, which was one of six rescue cats that share her home in Devonshire Bungalows, Millom.
She said: “He never bothered anybody. I’ve kept animals all my life – I’m broken-hearted.
“I can’t stop crying, he was part of the family.
“He would go off roaming but he always came back – I would never go to bed until he came home.
“It got to about 10.20pm and a neighbour knocked and said someone had found a dead cat.
“As soon as she said it was Oxford Street I knew it was him, he always went down that end.”
The mother-of-four has five surviving cats BB, Lily, Snowbell, Pippy and Shelly, and spends around £40 a week feeding her pets.
Mrs Lippe has kept animals since she was a young girl, but the severity of the attack has left her devastated.
She said: “I’ve been talking to my girls in Barrow and they were in tears – one of my granddaughters thinks of him as her cat.
“They become part of the family and the amount of people coming round you’d think I had lost a blood relative.”
Mrs Lippe said she believed the dog may have been used for rabbiting, due to the injuries it inflicted on Simba.
Residents have reported the dog as a light brown terrier-type dog.
She said: “There were pools of blood in the street.
“What if there was a child carrying a teddy? ”
She added: “It was a savage attack on an animal that wouldn’t harm anyone.
“It had gone for his face and neck. He darted under a car and the dog followed and dragged him out by his neck.
“I think the dog should be destroyed – something has to be done.”
The incident, which happened on Thursday, was reported to Millom police.
Copeland Borough Council, which deals with stray dogs in the Millom area, said the incident had not been reported.

@ SteveSome dogs have a prey drive that is difficult to control. Just like you cannot control a cats prey drive when they prowl around preying on and killing wildlife. If someone has deliberately set their dog on a cat, then the owners of the dog need to be severely punished, but you CANNOT blame the dog for this. If people let their cats roam around the streets then they are at risk of injury from other cats, dogs, traffic etc. Saying the dog needs to be destroyed is absolutely ridiculous, next thing you'll be saying 'It could be a child next!!!!!'View all 12 comments on this article

SORRY, I think my anguish in the terms of sarcasm in the first sentence has misguided you. I agree with everything you say... I did not actually mean dogs can run loose...I was trying to use that sentence with a degree of sarcasm. What you say is absolutely correct...how often do we hear of someone being savaged by a cat....how often do you have to jump back in fear when you go to stroke a cat; whereas there is always a risk in doing so for a dog. No Steve, I am appalled, sickened and disgusted. The dog, having demonstrated a killer instinct needs to be managed at all times....it has had its first strike....that is all any animal should be allowed.So apologies if my message was lost in the anger....I agree with you entirelyPosted by Pet Lover on 12 May 2012 at 13:33
