Death in Thailand: Barrow man's body flown home

A FUNERAL to bid farewell to a Barrow man who died in Thailand will take place next week.

Family and friends will meet for the funeral of Sean Patrick Flanagan, 46, with a Requiem Mass at St Mary of Furness Roman Catholic Church on Friday, May 4 at 12.10pm.

Mr Flanagan, who split his time between Barrow, Dalton and Thailand, died on March 30 just nine days after he was arrested in the holiday haven of Pattaya.

The Pattaya Daily News reported that Thai police charged him on March 21, alleging he stole a moped from a pawn shop and drove it to a nearby hotel.

Mr Flanagan, who denied the charge, is survived by his parents Olive and Tony, daughter Lauren, siblings Paula and Sarah and brothers-in-law Roger and Steve.

The funeral notice states Mr Flanagan was also a “friend of Mick, a loved uncle and friend to countless people who crossed his path. ‘Sleep gently nature’s boy’”.

The UK Foreign Office is understood to have assisted the family in bringing Mr Flanagan’s body back to Barrow. An official cause of death has not yet been made public.

Steven Strefford, 53, of Walney, described his friend as a “cracking guy” and “absolutely blinding lad” who had travelled extensively across Asia, Africa and Europe.

The family has requested mourners not to wear formal clothes at the service. Floral tributes, or donations to Cardio Risk in the Young in honour of Mr Flanagan’s late son, Scott, may be left at the church or sent to Little and Caine Funeral Directors at 48 Ulverston Road, Dalton.

The mass will be followed by interment at Barrow Cemetery.

Have your say

Flags,
Lived a life full of fun and made so many laugh. I am sure there are not many who enjoyed life as much,
Time to rest & chill now mate.
