David Dickinson returns to South Cumbria as his Barrow contestants go to auction in Kendal
Last updated at 17:06, Wednesday, 23 January 2013
THE nation’s best known bargain hunter helped Barrow residents make a tidy profit.
David Dickinson, presenter of ITV programme Dickinson’s Real Deal was in Kendal to film the second half of a show that started in Furness College, Barrow.
Anyone curious about a family heirloom or mysterious antique had been encouraged to head to the college in November, to try and haggle with the show’s resident antique dealers.
Those who decided instead to try their luck in the auction room headed to a packed out 1818 Auctioneer’s on Sandylands Road, Kendal, yesterday .
Sisters Sue Wilson and Christine Murray, both from Newbarns, each had items up for auction.
Ms Murray, 57, was hoping to turn a limited edition print of a painting by LS Lowry into cash towards a house move.
She said: “I didn’t think we would get on the programme, it was a nice surprise.”
Ms Wilson, 60, who was hoping for a profitable return on a set of Crown Derby chinaware, said: “I bought them in an auction around 20 years ago but they’re no good to me now.”
Despite having already made the acquaintance of celebrities including Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros, she was still excited to meet Mr Dickinson. “He is a very stylish dresser and a gentleman, ” she said.
Janice Harney, from Furness Park Road, was hoping to beat the dealer’s offer on her Treen needlecase.
“If it doesn’t sell I would be a little disappointed, but we have had a very nice day,” she said.
Cliff Fisher, 60, from Dalton, was selling a Japanese Charger wall plaque.
“I wasn’t too bothered about selling it, I just fancied a day out,” he said.
Mr Dickinson, known as ‘The Duke’, said he had been fascinated with some of the items on show in the college.
He told the Evening Mail: “I think there was a good mixture of goods. One collection that stood out for me was a lady who worked in a local theatre in Barrow as a young girl, before she moved to Los Angeles to work.
“She collected theatre posters and had signatures from stars like Lauren Bacall.”
The results of the auctions are a closely guarded secret, and will be revealed when the show airs in around four to six months.
