Danger railings to be removed from Millom park

A SET of ‘dangerous’ railings is to be removed from Millom Park.
The railing around one side of the park’s pavilion, next to a level concrete area, is to be removed after being broken by vandals.
Speaking at a meeting of Millom Town Council on Wednesday night, Councillor Brian Crawford said the railings needed to be removed as they were a potential hazard.
He said the weld around one end of the railing had been snapped, causing it to stick out in a dangerous manner.
Cllr Crawford, who is also a member of the Friends of Millom Park group, said: “The railing is in quite a dangerous state so we would have to pay to get it repaired, and possibly have it broken again, or just remove it all together.
“That way we’ll only have the cost of someone removing it.”
Cllr Frank McPhillips added: “We have repaired the railing before but it gets broken time and time again.
“As long as there is no problem with safety I don’t see why we shouldn’t remove it.”
The councillors all agreed that the railing will be removed, with Millom Town Council footing the bill. They also decided the opposite side railing, facing the tennis courts, will remain in place.
Coucillor Joan Hobbs, the chairwoman of the Friends of Millom Park, said: “The railing doesn’t serve a purpose any more. In years gone by, people would queue up there to hire equipment.
“We thought that, if we took the railing down, it was one less way for them to get on to the roof, where they cause havoc.
“We try our best and just have to hope that one day the idiots will move on and find something else to do.”
In November last year the Millom Park pavilion had its windows bricked up and extra security grills fitted to its doors, in a bid to stop the repeated vandal attacks.
Speaking at Wednesday’s town council meeting, PC Stuart Burgess said problems in the park had decreased since the turn of the year.
He said: “We do foot patrols in the park on a regular basis and the on going problems don’t seem to be as bad this year as they have been in the past.”

It's a crying shame/disgrace what has happened to Millom Park. We had well looked after and well used facilities and Copeland have well and truly ruined them. The local idiots aren't the only vandals involved here.
