Dancing being used to help dementia sufferers in Cumbria

Dance can help people living with dementia in Cumbria lead more active, independent and fulfilled lives.

For those that have memory problems or know somebody who has, dance and music can have a special role to play in addressing problems associated with dementia.

Dancing Recall is a new innovative countywide dance and movement project, designed for people living with dementia and those that care for them to do just that.

The pilot project is running throughout Cumbria with sessions having already taken place in Barrow, South Lakeland, Carlisle and Allerdale with 115 people having enjoyed the sessions so far. New sessions are planned for Whitehaven and Penrith to begin in March.

The Dancing Recall project is managed by Active Cumbria and has been developed in partnership with Cumbria County Council, NHS Cumbria and Dance Cumbria, a consortium of local dance practitioners. The sessions were designed by Daphne Cushnie, chartered neurological physiotherapist and community dance practitioner.

Daphne Cushnie said: “Dance and music can help improve individuals’ concentration and responsiveness, as well as get them moving in a fun and enjoyable way. It can also encourage people to express themselves, relax and bring them together with others. It can lift mood, have a calming influence and often evoke memories of happy times. There really are only positive side effects! And so far we have had a lot of fun.”

Dancing recall is set to run for 8 week blocks of sessions in Whitehaven at the Rosehill Theatre starting Friday 7th March and Penrith Leisure Centre starting Monday 10th March.

This is an ‘open to all’ and free of charge programme for those living in Cumbria and no previous experience of dancing is required. To book onto a session you can register online at www.activecumbria.org/dancingrecall or contact Active Cumbria by email info@activecumrbia.org or telephone on 01228 226885
