Pupils at St Mary’s C of E School in Dalton took part in the litter pick as part of the Eco School Award.

The school has already obtained the silver standard and the event was organised in a bid to gain the gold award.

Catherine Taylor, teacher in charge of the Eco Council, said: “The children have worked hard over the last few years so that we can become an Eco School.

“The children decided the litter pick would be a good way of looking after our school grounds.”

• The Evening Mail’s Big Clean is returning for a second year from June 16-24 and has been backed by Barrow Borough Council, Copeland Borough Council, South Lakeland District Council, and Centrica.
