ARMED police were called to Dalton today following reports a man had been spotted with a handgun.

A member of the public called the force at around 4.15pm, sparking a major response.

However rumours that someone had been shot were this evening proven to be false, as police gave an official statement on events.

Sgt Andy Travis of Barrow Police said: "Following a call from a member of the public to report a man with a handgun, we launched the appropriate response.

"Armed officers were dispatched to the area and carried out a thorough search for two hours, but did not find anything.

"It is necessary to respond in this way to protect the public and ourselves. The armed officers have now left the scene and our inquiries are continuing.

"To confirm once again; no-one has been shot.

Social media went into overdrive when armed units were spotted in the town earlier today.

Claims then followed that two wolves had escaped, sparking fear among residents.

But new zoo chief Karen Brewer dispelled those myths earlier tonight speaking exclusively to the Evening Mail.
