A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital in Preston following a two-vehicle collision in Dalton.

The incident, near to the Brown Cow pub, has resulted in the closure of Abbey Road.

Police were alerted to the incident at 5.41pm this afternoon (Sunday October 1) with crews from the North West Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance also attending.

Two fire appliances, one from Barrow and one from Ulverston, attended at 6.20pm.

A spokesman said crews were initially called out to try and rescue a woman from a Vauxhall Corsa involved in the collision, but that she was eventually able to walk from the car. Firefighters helped make the scene safe.

The woman was airlifted to hospital in Preston complaining of abdominal injuries, the fire crews reported. Two casualties who had been travelling in a BMW X3 were taken to Furness General Hospital with suspected neck injuries.

As of 9pm, the road is still blocked both ways between Market Street and Barrow Road and is expected to be for at least another hour. The accident is between the Brown Cow Inn and Mill Brow garage.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
