TWO people were seriously injured after the car they were travelling in left the road between Barrow and Dalton and crashed into a tree.

Firefighters from Barrow and Ulverston had to cut a woman free from a red Ford Fiesta which hit a tree after going over a drop when leaving the road at Mill Brow, in Abbey Road yesterday (Friday) afternoon.

Once released the woman, who was understood to be a passenger, was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital.

Today Cumbria Police said both occupants of the car, the other who is understood to be a man, were both seriously injured and taken to hospital in Preston for treatment.

Police, ambulance and fire services were all called to the location just before 4.30pm yesterday.

The road was closed for four hours for the rescue and police collision investigation work.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact Barrow police on 101 for information to be given to PC Lee Myers.
