It was heard that recently two nyala (antelopes) had died at the zoo “in association with a period of extreme wet and cold weather”.
Inspectors also said that they were unsatisfied about the sanitation and pest control for animals, saying that there are “ongoing rodent problems despite an in-house vermin control programme.”
The internal area for baboons at the zoo was deemed too small for the number of animals in there and that animals enclosed there for long periods in winter go without enrichment or bedding material.
There was also a call by inspectors to revise the hand-fed diet for some animals, which were considered “inappropriate”.
It was noted that evidence was found of a rodent presence in the food store for the animals, where rodent droppings were reported to be found.
The inspectors noted in the report that they were not satisfied with “the level of control and oversight” of veterinary systems at the zoo, despite reporting the “greatly improved” routine care by a consultant vet.
