PUPILS were so disappointed when rain dashed their hopes of taking part in a carnival that they decided to stage their own parade.

Children from Newton Primary School were left dejected when Dalton Carnival was cancelled in June due to a downpour.

But the flags and banners they had made with artist John Hall were put to good use in the pupils’ very own village carnival.

The youngsters and school staff were cheered on by their families and villagers when they held a Pirates versus Mermaids-themed parade on Friday.

The swashbuckling parade, which featured songs and music, followed the pupils performing a show based on the same theme the day before the carnival.

Headteacher Lisa Fell said: “The children had put all that effort into making the flags and they were upset when Dalton Carnival was cancelled. They were so happy and excited about having our own carnival.

“There was a lovely atmosphere for the parade with people cheering and clapping. We want to make it an annual event now.”

In a very busy end to the term, the pupils also held a sponsored scootering and running event which parents and families supported.

The sponsored event, with cake and refreshment sales included, raised more than £1,300 for school. The funds will be divided between each class.

Mrs Fell said: “For a small school with 60 pupils, that is a wonderful amount to raise.”
