The Invictus Games was created by Prince Harry for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women. There are 17 nations represented across the 11 sporting events at the third Invictus Games.

Sergeant Kell is competing in the Invictus Games to make his two-year-old daughter, Faith, proud and show her what can be achieved, even in times of adversity.

The 39-year-old veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq has recently recovered from brain tumour surgery and pneumonia. The Royal Engineer suffered traumatic brain and lung injuries while serving in Afghanistan in 2011. He also suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and a hearing impairment. He spent a year in and out of hospital and then received rehabilitation at the Help for Heroes recovery centres of Headley Court, Surrey, and Phoenix Centre, Catterick.

Sadly Sgt Kell lost his wife, Joanne Kell, 39, to cancer in July last year. Sgt Kell is competing in the Invictus Games to inspire their two-year daughter Faith and show her what can be achieved, even in times of adversity.

Ahead of Invictus Sgt Kell told the Mail: "All I want is for my little girl to be proud; she means the world to me.

"Invictus for me is something to achieve while getting better. It's a legacy for to me to show my little girl what can be done when the chips are down. People think life is against them, but there is help out there. You can get help, rise above it and achieve."

The sergeant has been playing golf on and off for 15 years. He plays at the Barrow Golf Club and in Rotherham.

Sgt Kell says training offers him a release of emotions and relieves stress.

Former Army private Charlie Walker, also a former Dowdales and Dalton St Mary's Primary pupil, is competing and coaching at the Invictus Games.
The multiple Invictus gold medal winner is a member of the wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby teams and he is coaching the sitting volleyball team. The UK won the first match in sitting volleyball today. Prince Harry and Mr Walker were seen chatting this week during training for the sitting volleyball event.

The wheelchair rugby takes place tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday and the wheelchair basketball runs from Thursday to Saturday.

The hero and sportsman fell ill with meningitis in 2006 while serving in the Armed Forces. The illness resulted in a double below-the-knee amputation. Mr Walker credits sport as being a vital part of his recovery process and he is now also helping others achieve their goals through coaching.

Mr Walker now lives in Retford but his proud parents still live in Dalton and, in recognition of the support given to him by Help for Heroes, his mum Edith and dad Charles are active volunteers for the charity in Cumbria.
