YOUNG and old runners worked up a sweat when they took on a classic race in Dalton.

The Dalton Charter 10km saw 113 participants sprint through the streets of the town last night, after setting off from Dalton Cricket Club.

A huge crowd turned out to cheer the competitors on and dozens of children also took part in a one-mile fun run.

The first 10km runner over the finish line was Ross Campbell, of Askam, in a time of 34 minutes 18 seconds.

The 20-year-old mechanical fitter said he was not expecting to take the victory.

Mr Campbell said: "It was hard. I just wanted to run fast and see how it went. This is the third time I've done it."

Councillor Wendy Maddox, mayor of Dalton, set the runners off and said the event was a huge success.

She said: "I always want to come to this.

"It's brilliant. I have been with it from the beginning."
