Hundreds gathered yesterday for the funeral of a police constable who fought a courageous battle with cancer for almost three years.

Amanda Jane Rawlinson passed away last week after fighting cancer since April 2014.

Around 200 colleagues, nurses, friends and family gathered at St Mary's Church, Dalton, for a celebration of her life.

Thirty of her colleagues paid a fitting tribute to the much-loved officer by forming a guard of honour as she was led into the church.

Draped in a union jack, Mrs Rawlinson was led into the busy church by her children to the song How Long Will I Love You.

Her husband Mark followed behind, carrying a photograph of Amanda and her police hat.

His touching eulogy covered everything from Amanda's early days in Liverpool to their meeting in a custody suite.

Amanda had served as a police officer for 17 years working in Barrow, Dalton, Askam and Ulverston.

The couple married in Jamaica in 2004, and renewed their vows last June in Barrow, one of a number of things on Mrs Rawlinson's bucket list.

Her husband also spoke of Amanda's unique relationship with sister Jackie. He said: "While all sisters have a special bond, it's safe to say Amanda and Jackie were exceptionally close.

"They shared a sense of humour and they could see off a bottle of wine in 15 minutes.

"Above all they shared a love for each other."

Mr Rawlinson described his wife as a tenacious and dedicated woman, an exceptionally brave officer, and an inspiration to others battling cancer.

He said: "Her life was cruelly cut short but in her short time she achieved so much. She worked hard at everything she did and expected others to do the same."

The service saw her daughter Laura read a poem, before a time of reflection to the song Almaz by Randy Crawford.

Mrs Rawlinson's coffin was then carried away to the sounds of Take That's Rule the World, followed by ABBA's Dancing Queen.

Mrs Rawlinson was 50 and leaves behind children Paul, Laura and Scott, and stepsons Chris and Andy.
